Road Users: Pedestrians, Motorcyclists, and Bicyclists
The changing trends in personal transportation, environmental concerns, quality of life, and safety are all converging on a world-wide increase in walking, cycling, and motorcycling as means of transportation. Unfortunately these modes in mobility also heighten exposure to potential crash injury. The concentrated efforts in many parts of the western world to increase traffic safety have indeed resulted in impressive declines in death and injury rates of car occupants. But our world is going through rapid changes in mobility patterns that highlight the plight of the vulnerable road users (VRUs), who constitute the majority of the casualties in many countries. Concerted efforts are now needed to analyze, understand, and define the source of the VRUs` traffic safety issues, and to propose and evaluate practical crash countermeasures without compromising the VRUs` mobility. The purpose of this international conference on the safety and mobility of vulnerable road users is to address all of these issues in order to provide a safer world. It is through meeting of minds and personal interactions of professionals committed to these safety issues, that significant improvements can be achieved.
