A UN General Assembly resolution adopted in March 2010 declared the period from 2011 to 2020 as the Decade of Action for Road Safety, with the goal of stabilising and eventually reducing road deaths and injuries worldwide. Road safety stakeholders were asked to set out a plan of action for the Decade. IRF would like to take this opportunity to convene a symposium to deliberate on how infrastructure can prevent road fatalities and injuries, concluding with the elaboration of a list of recommended actions that should be taken to ensure that the road infrastructure provided by a nation to its people is ‘safe’. The main topics for deliberation are as follows:
- Construction of forgiving roads
- Managing road infrastructure performance
- High quality innovative safety products
- Regional initiatives that work
- How to meet the road safety targets by 2020
