The combined pressures of a rapidly changing generation mix, evolving energy demand patterns, stringent sustainability targets and European policy are driving the development of smart grid and smart metering, as well as electric vehicles and home automation. On a larger scale, the transmission grids across Europe must be upgraded, extended and interconnected to allow a free-flowing energy market across Europe and to integrate ever more remote and variable generation inputs.
