Microproteins, largely overlooked until the past decade, appear to play interesting and sometimes outsized roles in biological regulation across the tree of life. From peptides that are important for transcriptional regulation in plants to bacterial small proteins that regulate the function of multidrug efflux pumps to micropeptides that modulate muscle performance in mammals, we are just now discovering the wealth of biological properties of these small proteins.
