The Market
The Middle East/North Africa region consumes some 6% of the global vegetable oil market but accounts for some 15% of global imports. With consumption of edible oils at around 7.1M tonnes/year, valued at approximately US$5.6bn, the sector is increasing on the back of rising GDP and a burgeoning population. The Middle East/North Africa region is dependent on imports of raw materials for oils and fats processing. Palm, soyabean and sunflower oils are the main oils consumed. In Egypt, with a population nearing 80M, up to 1.5M tonnes/year of vegetable oils are consumed.
