Much of the nation s electricity comes from traditional fossil fuels such as coal and natural gas. However the energy industry is witnessing not only dwindling supplies and increased cost of these traditional fuels, but many of the older power plants are reaching the end of their operating life. Additionally, increasing environmental concerns about the impact of conventional energy technologies contributing to global warming are consequently fuelling stringent regulatory polices and regulations. As such traditional fuel dominance will progressively fall.
This uncertain environment has stimulated interest in the deployment of significant renewable energy generating capacity to provide electricity to the national electricity network. The Government is setting targets to increasingly source energy from renewable areas, such as wind, solar, biomass and water power. The remit is to advance renewable energy technology in order to provide substantial and benign energy options for present and future generations. These pioneering new industries and technologies will bring significant benefits - not just through cleaner energy, but job recruitment and economic growth. With the correct support, renewable technologies can - and must - form the heart of our energy system.
Although many generation companies are in the early stages of implementing technologies and practices, it is imperative to design and optimize a diverse renewable energy portfolio, that provides greater resource reliability and lower system variability (or intermittency). This will in turn affect key operational aspects of the electricity grid, such as backup and load following capacity. In order to achieve this goal, funding research and development for renewable energy-generation technologies are crucial along with incentives for technology transfer and industrial research and development.
