INTRODUCTION:

Core stability creates several advantages for integration of proximal and distal segments in generating and controlling forces to maximize athletic function.1 Proximal stabilization is the main key for distal mobility.1 The primary functions of the proximal muscles are to provide stability against the effects of gravity so that upright posture is maintained.there is a lack of focus on core strengthening, towards athletes. Hence, a study examining the effectiveness of core strength is warranted in hockey players since dynamic balance and core are essential to enhance hockey performance. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to assess the correlation of core strength and dynamic balance in national hockey players.

Thus the hypothesis for this study will be, there is a significant correlation between core strength and dynamic balance or there is no significant correlation between the two.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES:

1.    To study the correlation of core strength and dynamic balance in national hockey players.

STUDY DESIGN:

Type of study:

            Co relational study

Sample size:

            34

Sampling method:

Convenient Sampling

Duration of the study:

6 months

STUDY SETTING:

·    Western and Central Railways Hockey club in Mumbai.

INCLUSION CRITERIA:

18 to 30 yrs athlete

EXCLUSION CRITERIA:

·         History of musculoskeletal injuries, abdominal or spinal or medical , ortho-surgical conditions

·         History of any neurological and cerebrovascular accidents.

OUTCOME MEASURES:

1.    Core strength using Pressure Biofeedback Unit

2.    Balance assessed by Star Excursion Balance Test

 STUDY PROCEDURE:

The study was approved by Institutional  Ethical Committee of Dr Balabhai Nanavati Hospital, Mumbai. The athletes volunteering for the study were explained the need and the purpose for doing the study. They were evaluated according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria after which a signed informed consent was taken from the athletes.

The study was carried by taking reading for the dynamic balance by using SEBT and then core strength testing was done using pressure biofeedback unit on the same day.
