"Case Reviews in Practical Clinical Pharmacology for Dentists"

This course is designed for the experienced general dentist and specialist. It is a case driven problem solving exercise regarding common pharmacologic problems encountered in clinical practice. This will not be an exhaustive review of literature, didactic pharmacology or text material on drugs rarely used in dentistry. Instead, the course will focus on practical clinical situations involving local anesthetics, analgesics, antibiotics oral sedation and potential drug interactions. The intention is to provide clinicians with practical information that can immediately impact their delivery of quality dental care.
Course objectives:
1. Understand and implement local anesthetic strategies for managing difficult to anesthetize teeth
2. Understand and implement preemptive analgesic strategies
3. Understand how to use oral sedation techniques to enhance pain control
4. Recognize odontogenic infection clinical signs and connect those signs to space involvement
5. Understand how to select antibiotics to treat odontogenic infections based on history and clinical presentation
Practical Review of the Top Ten Most Common Medical Emergencies in the Dental Office
This course will feature actual patient scenarios representing the top ten most common medical emergencies seen in the dental office setting. Course participants will be walked through how these emergencies will present and how to manage these emergencies utilizing standard emergency equipment and medications. Emphasis will be on common real world situations and not on the one in a million case. The intention of this course is to provide participants with practical information regarding office preparation, equipment and management of common medical emergencies.
Course objectives:
1. Understand how to set up a basic emergency kit for a dental office and use the equipment and medications in such a kit
2. Understand how to recognize the signs and symptoms of common medical emergencies
3. Understand how to manage the most common medical emergencies in the dental office
