Ganja is the second largest city in Azerbaijan and the centre of the Ganja-Gazakh economic region, located in the western part of Azerbaijan
Total area of the region is 12.49 thousands sq. km. sharing 14.4% of country s total surface area
Population of the region is more than 1.14 million people that makes 13.4% of the total population of Azerbaijan
Ganja and the whole economic region as well have the extensive transportation network including railways and highways connecting Azerbaijan to Georgia and the Black Sea. It is the main chain in realisation of Great Silk Road project, the modern international transportation corridor. In the frame of this project the reconstruction of Baku Kazi-Magomed Yevlakh Ganja Georgian board and local road building projects are being implemented
Food and beverages are the core of the agricultural industry of the region
The main sectors of food industry of the region are fruits, vegetables, tea, citrus, tabacco and grain growing also viticulture and fish
Potato growing, viticulture and grain growing provide for the larger portionof lical agricultural output. The region produces 13-14% of the total agricultural production in Azerbaijan, including 80-85% of potatoes, 28% of grapes, and 15% of livestock
Grain is mainly cultivated in Khanlar, Samukh, and Tovuz districts. There are enterprises specialising in grain processing, cognac and wine production
The textile industry of the region is based on local fiber production, including cotton. Carpet making enterprises are based in Ganja, Gazakh and Dashkesen
Easily accessible nature areas, an ecologically favorable environment, picturesque mountainous forests and medicinal mineral waters are ideal for the establishment of resort-type enterprises for local and international tourists. There are Goy-Gol and Hajikand recreation areas which are located at 1500 metres above sea level. The Naftalan recreation and treatment sanatorium is internationally well-known for its unique medicinal white oil
